How Pinterest Helped Me To Come Out

Seems pinterest isn't the new cool kid anymore. There is a mumble of disapproval. Some would just rather you didn't share your appreciation for their art or thing by pinning it. Along with an 'Opt Out' campaign based on the conflicting etiquette and terms of Pinterest revolving around copyright.

I'm in the other camp!

I'm so far away from this crowd it isn't funny. I'm in a whole other galaxy. In my world, there is nothing but appreciation, love and joy for pinterest. If you've been living under a rock, take a peek at my pins

I have a secret to confess

I'm a visual person (okay not so secret). I like pretty images and images of pretty things A LOT. I like to collect images. Those images make me smile and I could spend hours admiring them. I've been collecting such images for over a year. I have an impressive library. Secret spilled.

The pretty photos used to live on my memory stick. Then I upgraded them to my ipad where they are fashionably displayed. Before pinterest I felt conflicted. What if someone was upset about being in my collection? What if they were happy? I'd never know either way.

My giddy aunt!
Pinterest was like my little secret
but in the open for all to see
and enjoy along side with me

To be crystal clear. I didn't have these images for copy cat purposes. They weren't acquired for selling. They weren't for any evil reason. In fact 95% of them are saved with the artists name and price of the item so I could find them again. The library has also been a great reference point for when I want to make a purchase.

I'm going to roll my sleeves up and get all serious for a minute. I figured it might pay to know some of the facts about the other camp. Do you know which side you're on?

Some of the conflicting details from pinterest:

ETIQUETTE: "If there is a photo or project you’re proud of, pin away! However, try not to use Pinterest purely as a tool for self-promotion"

TERMS: "..you represent and warrant that: (i) you either are the sole and exclusive owner of all Member Content that you make available through the Site, Application and Services or you have all rights, licenses, consents and releases that are necessary.."

Well which is it? Are we pinning our photos, or photos of others? They are covering their ass. They state you must have the rights or consent to pin an item. They put the onus back on us. True story; I had to put up a 'be careful' poster in the kitchen at work this week. It's ass covering at it's best!

Who will we blame when the shit hits the fan?

The pinners?

Pinners be on your game. Credited images correctly and don't repin ones that aren't. I may be guilty of this one. In the euphoric moment of stumbling upon an amazing image I might hit repin too quickly before opening the source to check it out further. I blame that on lack of time, and the abundance of visual stimulation causing my senses to explode into overdrive. I also pin for the sake of bookmarking items to return to them later. Pin responsibly.

Pinterest?

They offer such a fabulous platform. Should they have done more though? Included something to stop people from pinning too vaguely. Should user upload be allowed? Re reading their guidelines tonight it feels a bit like an honesty box left by the side of the road with the farmers goods.

I've noticed at least one other web page that was using one of my images (along with thousands of others). It was a 'use these free images' type site. They offered no contact information to discuss removing my image. In those circumstance I felt 'ripped off'. However, pinterest doesn't give me that 'no fair' feeling. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Long live pinterest.

Which camp are you in and why?
